At the 2006 Eerie Horror Film Festival horror fans were treated to the film Call of Cthulhu (see my review here). 2007 brought us two new H.P. Lovecraft based films...the feature length Cthulhu and the short animated film The Other Gods. Based on the Lovecraft short tale of the same name, The Other Gods follows the story of Barzai, a priest of the "earth gods" and his deciple Atal. In an Babylonian attempt to look upon the faces of his god, Barzai scales the mountain of Hatheg-Kla only to find the dwelling place of the "Other Gods". According to the film's official website, it was created in the 1920's by animator Peter Rhodes and was recently found and painstakingly restored for the pleasure of modern audiences. The animation uses silhouettes to tell the tale of Barzai and his fateful encounter with the Other Gods. This style lends itself well to the tale. The detail in body movement is wonderful to watch as Barzai and Atal ascend the mountain but the real treat is when we lay eyes on the Other Gods themselves. The animation is a trippy, almost disorienting, swirl of unearthly shapes that would've made H.P. Lovecraft proud. |
