Lovecraft's Pillow would be a perfect fit for an episode of The Twilight Zone. It follows failed author Martin (Solo) who, after being turned down by his favorite magazine Cemetary Dance, is forced by his wife to pawn his laptop to help pay the bills. While at the pawnshop, Martin comes across a simple pillow that the pawnbroker informs him belonged to H.P. Lovecraft. Thinking this could be in the inspiration that he so sorely needs, Martin takes the pillow home, unaware of the unspeakable horrors it is capable of unleashing. Director Mark Steensland has been in the film business for the better part of two decades and that shows in his work. Working on a budget that is probably less than you have in your wallet right now, Steensland is able to make a film that does a wonderful job of telling this disturbing tale without attempting to outstep its means. The camera work is simple and effective. It even manages to get in a nice crane shot. The acting by Erie, PA natives is believable with a wonderfully subtle job by Erie, PA local Shannon Solo. Special FX are almost non-existent, but there is a nice set piece in the final scenes. The director calls his website Channel 99 and, if Lovecraft's Pillow could be considered the pilot episode of a TV show, I'll be there for the next episode. Back to Reviews |
