John C. Lyons is going to be a major name in film one day. How do I know? He made Hunting Camp, that's how. Watching this movie is akin to eating a wonderful ice cream treat laced with arsenic. The story revolves around Jake (George Petrus) and Jake (Trevor Huster) as they spend a weekend at a remote hunting camp. Through the whole movie, something seems amis and when the final puzzle piece is finally revealed, things take a dark twisted turn. As with Lyons' other film BOGO, the editing and camera work are simply beautiful to watch and, as anyone who's watched low-budget films knows, editing is often their weakest point. Everything looks and sounds nice and sharp here. This is even more amazing considering that portions of the film are done in the woods and there's a scene in a crowded bar...both of which can be a pain in the ass for all sorts of reasons. The actors include BOGO's Trevor Huster, Karen Jeffreys and Shannon Solo (with a cameo by Eerie Horror Fest founder Greg Ropp). All of the main actors do a good job. Sure, there's a few spots with secondary characters that seem a little broken, but they're so brief as to be almost unnoticable. The FX are very limited. The director knew the limitations of his budget and made a film that played well without letting those limitations get in the way of a good story. In addition to the film, the DVD copy that viewed had a making-of featurette, 8 minutes of outtakes and a few other goodies. This one is well worth a look for anyone who's even the least bit interested what a good independent film should look like. Currently, John C. Lyons is set to begin filming his first feature length film titled Schism. Back to Reviews |
