Bad. Ass. I suppose I could write those two words as a review and, honestly, they'd probably suffice...but that's not what you came here for, so let's delve into the best movie I've seen in a while. In case you've been living under a rock and missed the trailers that've been playing every 5 minutes for the last few weeks, Grindhouse is actually two movies in one. The first half is the Robert Rodriguez helmed Planet Terror. This is followed by Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. Sandwiched between the two are a handful of fake trailers by guest directors Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie and Eli Roth. The end result...a moviegoing event that you really won't want to miss! But let's focus on each segment. First up, Planet Terror. Honestly, if I have one complaint about Grindhouse, it's that the two main movies weren't shown in reverse order as Rodriguez's contribution is the more action-packed of the two. Planet Terror is a good old fashioned zombie flick (even if the credits call the zombies "sickos" since they're not technically dead...it's the 28 Days Later argument all over again). This one stars Freddy Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) as Wray, a mysterious wrecker driver and Rose McGowan (Jawbreaker) as Cherry, the stripper with a heart of gold. Sound Cheesy? Sound bad? It is. And that's what makes it so great. Without giving away too many of the plot twists, there's a chemical outbreak, a lot of really disgusting zombies running around and a small crew of survivors blowing the tee-total hell out of them...when they're not being brutally killed themselves. Definately, this movie could've stood on it's own and would've been worth the admittance price. ...but tossing it in with Tarantino's Death Proof is pure sleaze movie bliss. The second flick on the bill stars Kurt Russell (Escape from New York) as Stuntman Mike, a serial killer with a new kind of weapon. He stalks girls and murders them with his car! How friggin' sweet is that? The story is a bit slow in parts with Tarantino indulging in his trademark witty banter, but really takes a great turn when Stuntman Mike goes after a group of girls played by Rosario Dawson (Sin City), Tracie Thoms (The Descent) and real-life stuntwoman Zoe Bell. Bottom line, like Kill Bill before it (which I've taken to calling Grindhouse: Part 0), Death Proof is full of over-the-top violence, great dialog and gratuitious foot shots. A Tarantino Fan's wet dream. The end result is a double-feature worth watching again and again. Rodriguez prooves himself yet again as the master of action cinema and Tarantino does the kind of crime sleaze that only he can do justice. But enough fanboy gushing, go see it! Back to Reviews |
