| Ghosts. Creepy dolls. Donnie Wahlberg acting. None of these things scare me...except maybe Wahlberg. That said...Dead Silence wasn't a frightening movie for me. On the other hand, it definately had a cool factor and made me want to see more. The tale opens with a bang with the delivery of a mysterious ventriloquist dummy to the home of newlywed couple Jamie and Ella. Creepy things ensue. Now wrongly accused of the murder of his wife, young Jamie returns to his hometown to confront an old childrens' story that he believes is somehow tied to the death and the creepy dummy. The acting is rather cheesy but works to the benefit of the film. Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Lipton is a wealth of humor and cynical one-liners. The rest of the cast does a good job of moving the tale alone. The highlight of the acting was Judith Roberts as the villainous Mary Shaw. She creeped me out more than the dolls. The FX were sparse. The creators took a step away from their SAW roots for a more direct ghost story. What we do see looks great though, especially some creepy bits later in the film. Along with the FX, the visuals are one of the best parts of the film. The set pieces are creepy and beautiful and filmed in a lot of grey tones with very few bits of color giving it a very gothic feel a la Hammer horror. All said and done, this one's worth watching at least once. If you're scared of ghosts or creepy dolls, you're definately in for a few jumps and quite a few more shivers. Back to Reviews |
