With the current deluge of both comic book based and horror films in the past few years, it's amazing to me that there haven't been that many horror films based on comics. There's enough untapped stuff out there (Dead@17, Walking Dead, Swamp Thing and Hell!...all of Steve Nile's comics) to fill the theater seats for years to come! But enough of my comic fanboy rant. Let's get to the reason you clicked this page. The fan film of Josh Howard's Dead@17. It's obvious from the final product that director Mark Steensland (Lovecraft's Pillow, Sucker) did the one thing that anyone making comic-based film should do. He stayed true to the source material! For anyone who's read the comic, this short 10 minute film is based on the first issue of the original Dead@17 mini-series. Some scenes are so exact that it seems Steensland was using the comic page as a storyboard. There were a few small changes to make the film into a stand-alone entry, but they're expected and they stay with the vibe of the tale enough that they're forgivable. The acting from Jessica Ciccone and Katelyn Gracy in the starring roles of Hazy and Nara respectively do an excellent job here playing the two teenage girls going through some odd circumstances. There is also a notable performance by Shannon Solo (Sucker, Swamp Zombies) as a police detective Falcone. But what about the zombies and gore you ask? The make-up effects were designed by director "Monster" Mark Kosobucki (Edinboro Meets the Spider) and he does a great job here. Some of the gore wasn't bloody enough for my tastes, but what's there is done well and the zombies themselves look spectacular! If you can make him out through the make-up, look for a cameo by Monster Mark as "Zombie #3". Director Steensland has commented that while this film has the blessings of creator Josh Howard, the feature film rights lie elsewhere. If Dead@17 is ever optioned for a full film release, the creators should definately take a look at this fan film to see how it should be done! Back to Reviews |
