Over the many years since Howard Philip Lovecraft began writing about the Great Old Ones and the Elder Gods, many have tried to bring his dark visions to the screen. Like the creatures Lovecraft described, it seems as if the human mind has a lot of trouble explaining clearly the horrors of these terrors. There have been several decent Lovecraft films, both direct translations and inspired takes. Finally though, it seems like someone has done it right. In keeping with the era in which the original tale was written and set, The Call of Cthulhu is a silent film. The film is pure art from start to finish and the love of the original can be seen in every frame. The sets are immaculate. The acting is excellent. The FX are spot on and the great Cthulhu himself is perfect for the style of film...and, being such a fan of the original tale, I was looking for a reason not to like this one! I'm just hoping that this will be the first of many from the guys over at the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Phnglui mglw'nafl Cthulhu r'lyeh w'gah nagl fhtagn! Back to Reviews |
