Butcher House wanted so hard to be the next big indie hit and, if the story were a little stronger, it very well could have been. The title building in the story is the butcher house that's been boarded up since the '60s when a man was possessed by an Aztec ghost and murdered several of his co-workers. After the massacre, the owner of the establishment sealed the evil spirits in the basement with another Aztec ritual and closed the doors for good. Now the owner's dead and his son is trying to sell the place. The rest of the movie follows a group of kids who are hired to clean out the building. While trying to get the power turned on, the group unwittingly break the Aztec seal releasing the murderous spirits and chaos ensues. The strongest point in this movie is the editing. The jumping shaking camera and harsh cuts perfectly fit the industrial music-video feel that the director seemed to be going for. The acting is better than expected for an indie film. The special FX are well done with one scene in particular standing out as something you'll remember for a while after the credits roll. But as the end gets closer, you find that there are several loose ends that are never explained and that the entire bit with the Aztec stuff seems very out of place. If the plot had been tightened up and the Aztec stuff either dropped or explained, this movie could've easily garnered another skull...maybe even two. I'd love to see another film by this company. Just get a better script next go 'round. Back to Reviews |
