Without Danny Boyle at the helm, I didn't have high hopes stepping into the darkened theater to see this follow-up to his modern classic 28 Days Later. While not as good as the original, 28 Weeks Later is a good movie. The general storyline takes place (obviously) 28 weeks after the outbreak of the rage virus that began the previous movie. For those of you out of the loop, the rage virus turns people into one of the zombies from Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead redux...only they're technically not dead. Those previously infected with the virus have now starved to death and repopulation of Britain has begun with the assistance of the U.S. military. Naturally, something goes wrong or this movie wouldn't exist. The action in the film is top notch. It begins with a bang and keeps a steady pace throughout. There's a lot more gore this go 'round, including a scene that I previously saw a few weeks ago with Grindhouse (but this time it's much better). There's a lot of infected attacks, military shootouts and people being killed by the hundreds. With this much action and gore and a cool storyline, why's this one not as good as the first? The bottom line comes down to the characters. In 28 Days Later, the protagonists were much more realistic and well thought out. This time, we have a lot of cookie-cutter characters that you never quite connect with. The highlight of the movie, as one would expect, is Robert Carlyle in his role as a dad-with-a-secret who is reuniting with his children during the rebuilding. (Noir Note: If you're not familiar with Robert Carlyle by now, I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy of Ravenous and some popcorn.) This one's worth a watch at least once. If you liked Boyle's original, you'll probably be adding this to your DVD collection as it is a decent continuation to the storyline and will fill the gap between the first film and the inevitable 28 Months Later.
